Something more - La Paiva

I never understood why the world is the way it is--in my time you either composed tonal music or not. i.e you had to join a style team. One cancelled the other out you see. Well, I see the music profession differently. So I compose in the style that support the project . But when asked to recompose as opera Ruth Margraff's Locket Arias I decided to go tonal and not just tonal but mostly tried to emulate the style of the music of the characters time as they were real people. What I mean by mostly is that one aria references different times and places (Camille), so I time travel a little.

The hardest part of course was that Ruth wrote in modern prose and opera at that time rhymed. So I created rhymes with repetition and identities.  This final aria went through several text versions so I also had to fool with the scansion and change the ending a bit. Ruth's work is brilliant.

La Paiva

It's an oddity of a composers life that you can look back and check on what was and what it is now.
